FMIPA Hasanuddin University was officially established on August 17, 1963 with the name of the Faculty of Science and Natural Sciences (FIPPA) consisting of four Departments namely: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In its development, FIPPA added one department, namely Pharmacy so that it consisted of five departments.
In 1977, FIPPA and the Faculty of Engineering were put together in a Faculty called the Faculty of Science and Technology. Six years ago, precisely 1983, the combined faculty was expanded; the field of Science becomes the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) while the technology field is back to being the Faculty of Engineering. With the change in the Department of Pharmacy to become a Faculty in 2005, FMIPA has since returned to consist of 4 departments, as it was founded.
At the age of five decades, FMIPA has a Masters and Doctoral program, each in the Department of Chemistry and Mathematics. The Postgraduate Program in the Department of Physics and Biology is still in the stage of waiting for the establishment permit from the Director General of Higher Education. Alumni produced until December 2012 ranged from 6000 undergraduate, 45 S2 and 29 S3 graduates.
The spectrum of MIPA undergraduate work is quite broad, from teaching staff in Higher Education, Research Workers to Research and Industrial Institutions, to civil servants in various government institutions, including as powerful entrepreneurs and politicians. The existence of MIPA science as the parent of science makes its alumni quite flexible and has the ability in various spectrums of the profession.
